What is WebM?

WebM is an awesome and promising new open standard for compressed Video Content. A WebM file consists of VP8 video and Vorbis audio streams, in a container based on a profile of Matroska.

What is VP8?

VP8 is an open video compression format owned by Google and originally created by On2 Technologies to replace its predecessor VP7.

It was announced on September 13, 2008. On May 19, 2010, Google released technology IP rights for the VP8 format under irrevocable patent promise and for the specification text a Creative Commons license. Google also released source code for libvpx - a VP8 codec reference implementation under a BSD-like license, later changed to a BSD license plus an additional patent grant. There is contention over whether the old license for VP8 was in fact an open-source license.
